As the New Year is drawing closer, many people are thinking about the resolutions they want to set for 2016. The beginning of a new year is a great opportunity to assess your success of the previous year and look for ways that you can improve. The problem is that many people start the year with good intentions, but then they quickly slip back into old habits before January is over.

Instead of falling into the rut of failing with your business goals for the New Year, there are a few things that you can do to set yourself up for success:

1. Set Achievable GoalsNew Years Resolutions

When you are planning your resolutions, don’t set the bar too high. It is important that you are reaching for the stars, but you also need to ensure that your goals are within a range that can be reached. For example, if you want to focus on increasing business revenue in 2016, it might be unrealistic to set the goal that you will double your revenue within the first 30 days of the year. Instead, consider the growth trends of your company and set a smaller goal, such as increasing revenue by 3% each month.

2. Choose Measurable Goals

When your goals are measurable, you will be able to see the progress that has been achieved. Here is an example of the difference in how you might structure your goals:

  • Difficult to Measure: My business will grow this year
  • Measurable: The annual revenue of my business will increase by 25% before December 31, 2016

When your goals are measurable, you can have the satisfaction to know that you are achieving the things that you are striving for.

3. Leverage Accountability

It has been shown that accountability is an effective way to stay consistent with goals, because this accountability increases your responsibility for the results that are achieved. One of the easiest ways to get the accountability and guidance that you need is to hire a business coach to help along the way.
