5 Questions to Ask a Solar Installation Company

You’ve made the decision to have solar installed on your home – now’s it’s time to find the right installation team to complete your project. As you are talking to solar companies and getting quotes for installing your solar system, it’s important to put together a list of essential questions to ask. This consultation is basically an interview to find the solar company that is a great fit for your home and energy needs.

Here are some of the questions you might ask your solar installation company:

  • How long have you been in business? Whenever you are hiring a contractor to perform work on your property, it makes sense that you should hire a team with years of experience in the industry. Additionally, find out about the company’s licensing and insurance status.
  • Are you bonded and insured? While the hope is that nothing will go wrong with your solar installation, there is always a risk when it comes to home improvement projects. If a mistake is made, then you will have peace of mind knowing that your installation team holds the right insurance policy to cover the costs of repair or a workman’s comp. incident.
  • What is the right setup for my solar system? Installing solar power is much more complicated than putting a few solar panels on the roof. It’s important to consider your typical energy usage, then design a system that covers as much of that energy as possible. Our team will review your utility history, survey your home, your service panel, and offer personalized recommendations to optimize the layout and size of your solar system.
  • Are your sales consultants licensed by the CA State License Board?

Each Home Improvement Sales Person in the State of CA, must have a license issued by the CSLB to sign a contract with a homeowner.  This license is called an HIS license and the sales person must be finger printed and background checked before the license is granted and the license must be renewed every 2 years with the CSLB.

  • Should I buy or lease the equipment? If you don’t have the cash to pay for the system up front, then you can explore other financing options. We recommend that you buy the solar equipment through a loan instead of leasing the equipment. With a lease, you would typically make payments for 20 years, you don’t own the system at the end of the 20 years and you can’t take advantage of the Federal Tax Credit. On the other hand, buying solar equipment means that your payment goes away when the loan is paid in full in 12 years or sooner. You will own the solar system and be able to take advantage of the 26% Federal Tax Credit. You will also be off the life time payment plan with your utility company for your electricity, if you install enough solar panels to cover your electicity need.
