Does the Garage Door Need to be Greased?

Is your garage door screeching and groaning every time you open or close it? If so, it probably means your garage door is in need of some simple maintenance. With a quick tune up, most of the noisy racket can be reduced back to normal levels. Here are some things you can do to handle the problem:Does the Garage Door Need Grease?

Tighten and Clean All Hardware

Take a few minutes to check that all the nuts and bolts on your garage door are tight and free of dirt or grime that can grind and damage the hardware. Be sure not to overtighten them as this can cause more significant problems. Snug is good enough. This maintenance task also gives you a chance to check for any parts that are significantly worn and in need of replacement.

If you find any track rollers or hinges that show evidence of unusual wear–such as evidence of metal shavings or misshaped rollers–they need to be replaced, one at a time. Be careful when doing so, since some of the associated brackets may be under coil spring tension. For safety reasons its best to let a professional handle those. Lastly, check the garage door opener chain to ensure that it isn’t overly loose as it can also be contributing to the noise problem. If needed, check your user manual to review how to tighten it properly.

Lubricate All Moving Parts

To do this part, you’ll need a good quality lubricant spray from your local hardware store. Spray all hinges, open roller bearings, and the door springs. It is also a good idea to spray the torsion bar bearings. For ongoing maintenance purposes, this spray lubricant should be applied about three times a year. The rail on the opener track should also be lubricated with a low-temperature grease (not the spray lubricant) about once a year. But don’t overdo it, or the excess will muck up the opener carriage. A little bit goes a long way.
