Fight the Drought With Low-Water Landscaping

DSC_0179Everyone has heard the news by now: We are experiencing one of the most severe droughts on record in California. Our crops are suffering, and many towns are in danger of running out of water.

That sounds like bad news. But the good news is that solutions to our problem do exist. Both the federal government and California state government have initiated various measures to solve our dilemma, and as concerned citizens we are all trying to do our part to limit water usage.

What can you do? The best way to combat a drought is to conserve water in every way possible. You might be surprised at how much water we are all wasting on our lawns! Yes, a lush grassy lawn is attractive… but there are many other creative, beautiful options for landscaping. In fact, low-water landscaping options are so well suited to the climate and natural beauty of our state, that you might find you prefer your yard’s new look once you remove your water-thirsty lawn.

We often replace lawns with beautiful, low-water landscaping featuring:

  • Dry river beds
  • Decorative gravel
  • Water wise colorful plantings on drip irrigation systems
  • Artificial turf
  • Permeable pavers

You can do your part to combat the drought by installing low-water landscaping. And as a bonus, you will enjoy a big savings on your water bill!

Making it affordable. Many homeowners want to make the switch to low-water landscaping, but assume they can’t afford the cost of turf removal and installation of their new landscaping. Luckily, you have two options available to help offset the initial cost of the project.

The Metropolitan Water District of Southern California is offering turf removal rebates, to assist in the cost of removing your current lawn. These rebates offer 2 dollars per square foot, and cover up to 3,000 square feet of lawn. You can even apply for these rebates online, at socalwatersmart.com. We are happy to assist our customers with the process.

The Home Energy Renovation Opportunity (HERO) program offers another option for financial assistance. HERO will finance 100 percent of the cost of eligible home energy upgrades, at a low, fixed interest rate. Many water-efficient products, including landscaping upgrades, are eligible for HERO financing. You can apply for this special financing through the HERO website , or give us a call at McCabe’s landscaping to discuss eligible water-efficient upgrades for your yard.
