Firewalls: What Are They and Do I Need One?

The Internet has revolutionized the way we do business, leading to vastly improved communication. However, it can also be your downfall if you don’t provide adequate security to your computer network. Having an adequate firewall is one of the cornerstones of internet security for businesses as well as personal computer use.

What is a firewall?Hacker

A firewall is a security system which prevents unauthorized access to your private network. All messages entering or leaving your network must pass through this security system. Each message is examined by the firewall, and those that do not meet security criteria are blocked.

How do I install a firewall?

In both Windows and Mac operating systems, firewalls are included as part of the package. Unfortunately, these firewalls are nowhere near robust enough to protect a business and their sensitive files.

For businesses, additional protection is necessary. You need to install a third-party firewall package, but doing this correctly will often require the assistance of someone trained in setting up this type of firewall. Having the proper training and experience is critical.

Your broadband router may also include a firewall. However, many of these firewalls are very basic, so don’t depend upon them to offer all the protection you need. Models with a higher level of protection are available, but you’ll probably want to consult with an expert to make sure you get the model you need for your business.

Since configuring the firewall to meet your needs can be difficult for some computer users, consulting an expert is always a good way to ensure the firewall is installed and operating to the best of its ability.

Is that all I need to do?

Unfortunately, no. A firewall is just one level of protection – necessary, for sure, but not the only form of internet security you need. A firewall is designed to protect your network connection, but most are not able to authenticate individual users. It is an important part of your network protection, but be sure to utilize other methods of security as well.
