Home Carpet Cleaning: Start the New Year Right

As the holiday season closes and you finish boxing and storing your decorations, it may be a great time to get your carpets cleaned. Any seasonal spills, worn carpet trails, or everyday carpet use should be addressed with a thorough cleaning. You may ask yourself how often should you clean your carpets? That all depends on how they are used, and how well they are cared for.

There are several things you can do to prolong the time between professional carpet cleanings. Here are the more important actions you can take that will keep your carpets cleaner for longer:

Don’t Wear Shoes in the House

From the perspective of carpet care and home sanitation, shoes should not be used inside your home. When you arrive at a home, take your shoes off and invite any guests to do the same. Shoes track a lot of filth into a home, including bacteria from animal waste, chemicals, dirt or mud, and other product that doesn’t belong in your living space.

Vacuum Frequently

At least once a week, vacuum every carpeted surface in the house. If this isn’t your normal routine, make this a New Year’s resolution and carve out time to do it. The effort of cleaning debris and dirt that finds its way onto your carpets will prevent these things from burrowing deep into the fibers. When this happens, it damages the carpet. Plus, it’s just nice to have a clean floor to walk on without your shoes!

Pets and Carpet Care

Animal friends are a wonderful addition to family and home life, but they can wreak havoc on your carpets. Fortunately, it doesn’t have to be that way. When any “accidents” happen where your pet soils the carpet, it’s critically important to clean up the mess immediately. Left uncleaned, the stain will set, bacteria and disease can flourish, and the odor will foul your indoor air.
