Do you feel like you can never keep up with the housework? Many people find it difficult to relax when the floors need to be scrubbed or there are dirty dishes in the sink.

If this resonates with you, then it might be time to implement a new cleaning system. The most effective solution is to create a cleaning plan. Some tasks can be addressed on a daily basis, while other chores can be done weekly or monthly. Here are some guidelines to help you get started:

Daily

A few basic chores can be done each day to help stay ahead of the stuff that collects over time. Look for ways to do a little cleaning here and there so you don’t have as big a task to deal with later. A few examples include:

  • Making the bed
  • Wiping down counters
  • Washing dishes
  • Unloading the dishwasher
  • Organizing mail
  • Picking up clutter and toys

Weekly

Assign specific days of the week to complete certain chores. You can create a routine and do just a little cleaning each day, ensuring that every part of your home is touched each week. Here is an example of how you might structure your weekly schedule:

  • Sunday – Laundry (washing, folding, and bed linens)
  • Monday – Kitchen (clean appliances, sink, stovetop, and disinfect handles)
  • Tuesday – Bathrooms (mirrors, sink, shower, toilet, etc.)
  • Wednesday – Organization (find a closet or drawer that needs to be sorted and organized)
  • Thursday – Paperwork (file paperwork, sort mail piles, shred documents, take out the trash)
  • Friday – Entire House (dusting, vacuuming, sweeping, and mopping)
  • Saturday – Take a well deserved day off!

Monthly Tasks

Each week of the month, choose a day where you can deep clean a space. For example:

  • Week 1 – Clean out the fridge
  • Week 2 – Disinfect toys
  • Week 3 – Wash the mirrors and windows
  • Week 4 – Spot clean and vacuum furniture
