If you’re planning to obtain ACA (Affordable Care Act) health insurance through the health insurance marketplace for 2020, open enrollment dates are November 1st to December 15th, 2019.  All 2020 plan and benefit information will be released October 26th, 2019 for your review prior to the open enrollment period. If you aren’t planning on ACA health insurance, then it is a great time to talk to an insurance expert to find the right coverage for your family.

Beginning on November 1st, 2019, you can complete your enrollment, re-enroll, or make changes to your current plan. Coverage will take effect on January 1st, 2020.  If you need to research your options or talk with an insurance agent before enrolling, you have time to do so. Just be sure to complete your enrollment by December 15th, 2019.

For most individuals and their families, the annual enrollment period is the window of time allotted to obtain health insurance or make changes to your health plan for the 2020 coverage year. However, if you have experienced life changes in 2019, you may want to begin considering how they may affect your coverage needs now. For example, if you have experienced changes such as:

  • Marriage or divorce
  • Birth or adoption
  • Change in dependents age or status
  • Gain or loss of employer coverage
  • Changes to financial circumstances
  • Move to a new state with different coverage options

Other things to consider: whether your current plan is meeting the needs of you and your family, or whether you need to choose a different coverage level or network provider.

At any time, a qualifying life change may allow you to enroll or make changes to your current coverage outside of the normal enrollment period. Qualifying lifetime events activate a personal special enrollment window of about 120 days, starting 60 days before the event happens. During this window, you can adjust your existing health insurance plan, change your plan, and if needed, you can apply for premium subsidies and reliefs as appropriate.
